As we turn the calendar to spring in the Pacific Northwest we will collectively emerge from our winter hibernation to enjoy the natural beauty and array of outdoor activities that the Seattle area has to offer. This means there will be more pedestrians traveling to our parks, farmers markets, and waterfronts.
Unfortunately, pedestrian injuries and death are surging in Seattle and beyond.

Seattle survey: Traffic safety tops community concerns as pedestrian deaths surge
Remember though you are always in charge of your own safety. As a pedestrian you can take three simple steps to be as safe as possible.
1. Limit Distractions
When crossing the street make sure to be aware of your surroundings. This means checking both directions prior to leaving the safety of a curb, making eye contact with approaching drivers when possible, to ensure they see you, and most importantly stay off your phone. Crossing the street is not the time to be texting or searching for a new song. Be aware of where you are, and wait until you’re safely on a sidewalk to check your phone.
2. Be Visible
When possible wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night or low light conditions such as dusk or dawn. Stay in well-lit areas when possible, near sources of ambient lighting. When possible use a pedestrian flag to make yourself more visible to oncoming traffic.
3. Use Designated Crosswalks
Most importantly, always use designated crosswalks when crossing streets. This is where drivers will expect to see pedestrians and be most prepared to stop accordingly. If you cannot find a marked crosswalk, remember that in Washington State there is a constructive crosswalk between any two curbs crossing a street, so cross curb to curb. Be sure to obey traffic control devices and only cross when you have the greenlight or walk signal.
These three simple rules will help make you a safe pedestrian this summer, and reduce your chances of being the next victim of an unaware driver.
